Chandigarh, commonly known as 'the city of gardens,' has a few of the most beautiful gardens. History of Botanical Garden, Chandigarh
The Botanical Garden laid its foundation on the 30th of May 2002 by Lt. Gen. (Retd) J.F.R Jacob. He was the then administrator of the city. The Chandigarh Administration has entirely looked after the garden.
This garden is connected to a nearby nature reserve called Patiala-ki-Rao forest by a pathway. The forest covers a large area of 350 acres.
The person behind this project was Gen. (Retd.) Dr. S. F. Rodrigues, who used to be the Governor of Punjab and administrator of U.T. Chandigarh. He cared about the environment and loved nature, so he guided and supported the project with his ideas and encouragement. The garden was officially inaugurated on the 2nd of January, 2007, by H.E.
The garden is located near the village of Sarangpur and is spread across 176 acres of land. The primary aim of developing a botanical garden was to promote research and educate people about our floral heritage.
The Indian floral heritage is one of the most powerful and vivid. It helps us to know our roots. Besides, this garden could also be a great destination for eco-tourism in Chandigarh.

Architecture of Botanical Garden, Chandigarh
The Botanical garden is divided into 15 Botanical sections. Below is the list of all the sections:
1. Medicinal Plants Garden: Also known as the herbal garden, it takes 40 acres of land from the total. This specific garden has over 75 species of medicinal trees and 55 species of medicinal shrubs, herbs and climbers. Few medicinal trees like Amla, Neem, Arjun, Sandalwood, Jamun, etc. can be seen. Medicinal herbs like Giloy, Ashwagandha, Tulsi, Mehndi, Brahmi, Bringraj, etc., can also be found.
2. Bambusetum: This section has 22 species of Bamboo and 3 species of canes. A few fern species have also been planted in this section.
3. Ficus Grove: There are 18 species of Ficus planted in this section. It includes Peepal, Benjamina, Rubber Tree, Anjiri, Mysore Fig tree, etc.
4. Arboretum: This section has 90 species of trees like Pink cedar, Haldu, Bel, Devil tree, Kadamb, Neem, Ashok, Honeyberry, etc.
5. Flowering Tree Section: More than 35 species of flowering trees like Australian Kikar, Hari Champa, Kachnar, Java ki Rani, Pink cassia, Bottle brush, etc., are planted in this section.
6. Pinetum: This section belongs to the 12 coniferous species, including pines.
7. Palmatum: This section has 20 species of Palms and cycads, including some pseudo-palms.
8. Sacred Grove: This section is developed as a Cosmic tree/Sarva Dharma Vriksha. There are 11 branches in this tree, and the awe-inspiring feature of this tree is that each branch represents a specific religious Vatika.
9. Cactus and Succulent section: 100 varieties of Cactus and succulent plants have been planted in between a beautiful waterbody. This arrangement adds an extra essence to the section.
10. Aquatic Plants Section: As the name suggests, this section has around 30 aquatic plant species.
11. Rare Plants Section: This section is a collection of some rare plants from India and other countries. This section has been allotted 3 acres of the total space.
12. Tropical Rain Forest Section: This section has a lot of species specially dedicated to rainforests.
13. Bulbous Garden: This section specifically has Bulbous plants spread across 2 acres of land.
14. Japanese Garden: This part has a species of Japanese features. It is across 5 acres of the total space.
15. Nutrition Garden: This garden is basically a collection of fruit species suitable for tropical and subtropical regions.
Besides these sections, the garden has 2 lakes along the Patiala-Ki-Rao, covering a huge land area. These lakes have been designed to harvest rainwater.
Apart from these lakes, there are 5 water bodies developed for the same purpose that add beauty to the place. A designated place has been developed for an exclusive nursery.
There is also a small library having books on medicinal plants, forestry and the environment, and you have free access to the library.
The building near Gate No.1 is currently serving as a Nature Interpretation Centre. Inside, it displays information about medicinal plants, various types of plants, and wildlife to raise awareness among people about nature, the environment, medicinal plants, forests, and wildlife.
Furthermore, there's a Conference Hall that can accommodate over 100 people. This space is being utilised to educate students, farmers, NGOs, and other interested groups. Workshops and other activities related to environmental education are also taking place in the Conference Room.
A cycle track has been laid for the visitors who wish to have a round of the garden. The department will provide the cycle at nominal rates so that you can enjoy a morning bicycle round in nature. A small cafeteria has also been developed where you can enjoy some refreshments.

The park does not charge any entry fee. You can visit the park any day of the week from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm at your convenience.
